Whole Blood Donation

Whole Blood Donation is the most common form of blood donation. This procedure collects the “whole blood” and can separate it into its transfusable components. While the usable volume of the blood components through whole blood donation is less than other methods of donating, whole blood donation generally takes the least amount of time and you’ll be eligible to donate every 56 days.

Platelet Donation

Platelets are a blood component that are particularly important for organ transplants and surgeries, as they help prevent blood loss. Generally, platelet donation occurs on an appointment basis and is required for specific purposes for specific patients. As a donor, your blood will go through apheresis, separation into its components, and the non-platelet components will be returned to you. Be sure to call ahead to learn about opportunities to donate platelets.

Red Blood Cell Donation

Red blood cells are the most commonly transfused blood components, which is why double red cell donation is a big help. With the help of an apheresis machine, the red cells are separated from platelets and plasma, which are returned to the donor. If you meet the higher hemoglobin and height/weight requirements, you can choose Double Red Blood Cell Donation and give twice the volume of red cells as whole blood donation allows. Double red blood cell donors are eligible to give every 112 days.

Plasma Donation

Plasma donation is important for the continued care of patients worldwide with chronic and often rare diseases that count on plasma proteins for treatment. If you’re a donor with Type AB blood, plasma donation may be the most beneficial way for you to give. While Type AB red cells can only be given to other Type AB recipients, Type AB is the universal plasma donor.
